The One Day on Earth Project is one of the most comprehensive and coolest global crowdsourcing projects ever, and I am excited to participate. True to my form, I recorded a video log to commemorate the day.

Friday is 11/11/11, and the minds behind the documentary and online video archive known as "One Day on Earth" are hoping thousands of people around the world will film a moment in their lives this day.

Other filmmakers have used crowd-sourced footage to recreate life in a day, but what sets "One Day on Earth" apart is the online community that has grown around it since its experimental launch around the date 10/10/10, said founder and director Kyle Ruddick, who conceptualized and started the project in 2008 by reaching out to people from his home laptop.

The project's participants have since grown to 20,000, and they not only can submit their own video but can draw on the website's archive to create their own masterpieces.

Teeth & Vagina Dentata [film, phenomenons, cake]

I watched Teeth (2008) last night with my girlfriend. Yes, that whole movie about a girl with teeth in her vagina doing (horrid!) damage to the males she encounters. Basically, a man's worst nightmare.

While we were watching it, we were actually surprised. The film was done a lot better than either of us thought it would be and we actually enjoyed it (even me, the penis-possessor of the pair!); the film wasn't just a vagina-chewing-penis horror flick that most seem to expect in line with the Scream-born modern era horrorgore without a story line, and wasn't pornographic or overly gory as I thought it might be.

I admit I don't have much faith in modern horror.

M. commented on the cinematography and the well-thought out shots (as opposed to most modern horror films, people!) and I enjoyed the purposeful pacing and the fact that they actually explored the real cultural phenomenon of vagina dentata without being exploitative in any way.

Note: this film could be triggering to some, watch with caution.



"Vagina dentata" is a male cross-cultural myth seen in numerous cultures around the world (Native American, Greek, African, Egyptian, etc.) in which the man is afraid of inserting his penis into a woman's vagina for fear of his penis being injured by the supposed toothed vagina.

From The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets by Barbara Walker:

"Toothed vagina," the classic symbol of men's fear of sex, expressing the unconscious belief that a woman may eat or castrate her partner during intercourse. Frued said, "Probably no male human being is spared the terrifying shock of threatened castration at the sight of female genitals." But he had the reason wrong. The real reason for this "terrifying shock" is a mouth-symbolism, now recognized universally in myth and fantasy: "It is well-known in psychiatry that both males and females fantasize as a mouth the female's entranceway to the vagina."

When I did a Google image search for "vagina dentata," the only blog-appropriate images were cakes. Yes, cakes inspired by the film.

The Golden Girls Tackle Lesbianism [television]

I happened to catch a 1986 episode of The Golden Girls this evening dealing with the issue of "lesbianism" entitled "Isn't it Romantic."

I found it interesting when the episode was made - I don't think of "gay" as becoming mainstream (ok, even talked about) until the 1990's, but these witty old ladies from Miami were always ahead of their time.

Dorothy's old friend, Jean comes to Miami for a visit and Dorothy decides not to tell Blanche and Rose that Jean is a lesbian. Then, after spending time with Rose, Jean begins to fall for her. Meanwhile, a new VCR, prompts Sophia to rent "dirty movies."

I also enjoy seeing the shifts in technology over the years, and it tickles me to death that Sophia is using the "new" technology of VCRs to rent and watch dirty movies!

Obsessed Paula Abdul Fan Commits Suicide Near Her LA Home [celebrities]

I'm not quite sure how this one got past me, but Paula Abdul-crazed American Idol hopeful Paula Goodspeed committed suicide outside of Abdul's Los Angeles home in November of 2008.

Celebrity stalking is nothing new, sadly neither is death of a celebrity as a result of said stalking, though this is one of the first times I can recall a stalker/fan committing suicide near the home of their "beloved."

Hiccup Girl Charged with Murder [crime]

All the fucked up stuff happens in Florida. "Hiccup Girl" Jennifer Mee has been charged with first-degree murder in St. Petersburg.

Jennifer attracted national media attention when she couldn't stop hiccuping for five weeks in 2007.

Father & Son Make Homemade Spacecraft, Record Video [tech]

This is pretty awesome. A father and son from New York built their own spacecraft in which they attached an iPhone and launched it into space, capturing an incredible video.

As someone who lives in an extremely small studio in San Francisco, I am always trying to think of creative ways in which to utilize my space, and this furniture definitely looks like something I could incorporate into my space.

Justin also recently has surpassed Lady GaGa's Bad Romance as the most-viewed YouTube video of all time, and Twitter now dedicates 3% of their servers to his Twitter traffic.

iPad Becomes MenuPad [tech]

A restaurant in Australia has employed the use of the MenuApp for the iPad and thus has replaced its menus with iPads.

According to Gawker:

The app allows the restaurant to easily change its menu, shows pictures of each dish, and also communicates orders directly to the kitchen, cutting down on server error. And, just to show off, it can even recommend dishes based on the weather or your mood. The video below shows the MenuPad at work.

Avril Lavigne Launches Hidden Rose Fragrance [fashion faux paus]

Avril Lavigne launched a new line of perfume called Forbidden Rose. According to Shopping Blog:

A new commercial for Avril Lavigne's Forbidden Rose fragrance has been released. The fragrance comes in a purple flavicon. The Scented Salamander says the woody fruity floral fragrance's top notes include red apple, white peach and bourbon pepper.

Dog vs. Cat. [cat wins]

This video is brilliant. A cat and dog of generally equal proportions get into a fight. The dog gets slap happy and hyper, even going so far as to hump the perturbed cat, while the cat just waits, annoyed, for the dog to finish his dance and then ends the fight by bitch slapping the dog in the face and walking away.

If felines' vocal chords were developed to the point that they could speak, this cat most definitely said, "fuck you, assbitch."

Countess LuAnna Has "Class," but Can't Sing.

So, in the spirit of Atlanta Housewife Kim Zolciak, New York Housewife Countess LuAnn has recorded her own single, "Money Can't Buy You Class," and it is as awful as you imagined.
