Samsung Galaxy Tab is Coming! [tech]

The iPad will finally have some competition. Samsung has announced their Galaxy Tab computer will be available November 10th in T-Mobile stores.

via Mashable:

After Verizon and Sprint, T-Mobile is the third major U.S. carrier to reveal the launch date for the Galaxy Tab, and — unless AT&T spoils it for them — T-Mobile customers will get the chance to buy the device one day before Verizon customers and four days before Sprint customers.

In the announcement, T-Mobile mentions its fast HSPA+ mobile broadband network, which should go hand-in-hand with Galaxy Tab’s 3G chip, but it doesn’t mention the price. The mystery of Galaxy Tab is nearly solved, but until we hear from AT&T and learn the price for the device from T-Mobile, the puzzle won’t be complete.

Tonight at the Commonwealth Club, 7:30pm.

via SF Weekly
:

From where we sit, it looks like a done deal. Marijuana will be legalized sometime within the next ten years. Certainly, the industry as it stands is preparing itself for change. Uh, not that we would know anything about it. Tonight at "Marijuana Economics: Prop 19," the heavy hitters of the current bid for legalization sit down and discuss the actual facts of the matter. Richard Lee, the author of Proposition 19, the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010, is in the "pro" seat. Tim Rosales, the campaign manager of the No on Prop 19 outfit, is in the "anti." And somehow, somehow, Beau Kilmer of the RAND Drug Policy Research Center is thought not to have a position, but rather a lot of information.

Lungs Can Taste! [weird science]

Discovery of bitter receptors in lungs could lead to innovations in asthma treatments, scientists say.

via Discover Magazine:
Yes, taste. In a Nature Medicine study, Stephen B. Liggett and company found receptors on the smooth muscle in the lungs that respond to bitterness, similar to the bitter taste buds on the tongue. And, Liggett found, the receptors’ reaction to bitterness is to relax the muscles, and therefore to expand airways. That was totally unexpected, he says, and opens intriguing possibilities for pulmonary treatment—for example, asthmatic symptoms could be treated by exposing these receptors to bitter compounds.
